Weekend Recap

This weekend was pretty awesome. It was jammed packed and filled with family and friends-the best kind of weekend.

Saturday morning my sister and I hit up a neighborhood garage sale. I'll share some of my finds later, but my favorite was a yellow ceramic planting pot that I got for $1!

After the sale, the boys and I headed to an autism walk.
//Ben & his future gf Sydney//Diva Grace//Alissa stealing my baby//

There was also this AMAZING face painter at the walk who transformed Ben into Iron Man. He was in heaven.

After some naps and the grocery store, it was time for The Glow Run. This was Ben's first race and he was so excited! We all walked since most of us had little kids and were pushing strollers. Ben managed to walk the entire 3.1 miles with only the occasional piggy back from Aunt Alissa. Jack was a trooper and slept through the majority of it.

Ben LOVED his medal and talked about it the whole way home. He was so tired from a full day that he went straight to his room when we got home and feel asleep. I wasn't far behind him.

Sunday we celebrated my dad's birthday and I packed for my week long work trip aka prepare as much in advance for the husband so the kids eat something besides Cheetos for dinner all week.

Hope you're having a great start to the week!

5 on Friday

After taking a break from the last 5 on Friday, I'm back!

//one//
Let's start with a picture of a baby that's not mine. I saw this online somewhere this week and for some reason it just tickled me SO much.

//two//
I have to give my husband a little shout out. I was out of town one night last week for work and I'll be gone again pretty much all next week. He's been stepping up to the plate, and jumping right in. Bonus? The kids survived. And Jack got a bath...even if it was in the kitchen sink. You can tell Jack hated it. Not.

//three//
I bought all the ingredients to make these Strawberry Shortcake Bars from Iowa Girl Eats awhile ago, but I haven't gotten around to making them. I'm going to carve out some time on Sunday to whip up a batch. My grocery store didn't have dehydrated strawberries though so mine will be a mixture of cranberries and blueberries.

//four//
Ben started a new school a few weeks ago and to say we love it is an understatement. I'll share why we made the switch in the upcoming weeks, but Ben learns SO much more and is actually excited to go to school. One of the best parts? His teacher is a girl J went to school with growing up. J grew up in a very small town so the chance of this happening is pretty crazy. It's pretty good reassurance that we're in the right place, ya know?

//five//
I know everyone is busy and I can't stand those people who are always talking about how busy they are. But you guys, things are crazy busy. We have something going on every weekend from now until July. Not to mention, next week I'll be on a work trip for 4 days and 3 nights. I've never been away from Jack longer than a night and I'm most worried that he's going to freak out, especially at bedtime. Or I could be completely wrong and the boys will change the locks. Ben's like a little adult and pretty darn independent so I'm not as worried about him. Plus no mommy=more Cheetos and Wii time.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I'm doing an autism walk on Saturday morning and a fun 5k Glow Run Saturday night followed by my dad's birthday on Sunday.

What are your plans?

Easter 2014

This Easter was pretty darn great. We went to church, hosted Easter lunch at our house for my side of the family, and then traveled to J's aunt's house for dinner and another egg hunt.

The boys' Easter baskets. I ordered Jack the white one a few weeks ago from Pottery Barn and when I got it in the mail this week I noticed how much bigger it was than Ben's. I realized I ordered Jack the large basket size and Ben's was the small. I ended up just turning the embroidered names to the back and made Jack's the little one. I know this might not seem like a big deal, but my OCD self could hardly stand it. I plan to order Ben a new large basket this week for next year.

I love Jack's little hand reaching for his goodies.

You may remember in a 5 on Friday, I posted inspiration pictures for an Easter tablescape. I decided to keep it really simple. I picked up these plates last minute from Kohls. I believe they are from Bobby Flay's line.

After lunch, the boys scoured our yard for eggs.

Notice daddy's net sneaking in the picture. I think he was trying to cheat.

It was almost 90 degrees on Sunday so we came in after the egg hunt and Ben and my dad dyed some eggs.

J's aunt lives in the country and has an enormous yard. All the cousins love running around trying to find all the eggs. And there are LOTS of them.

Jack was content to just watch the older kids collect eggs. Next year he'll be out there with them running around like a crazy man.

And finally, we did get a family photo of all 4 of us, but neither one of the boys were looking at the camera and we were all squinting. I may still put it in the scrapbook, but I'm pretty sure J would kill me if it made it on the blog.

Jack {10 months}

Jackers, Snackers, Crackers. Not sure why we call you this, but we do:) On Monday you turned 10 months old. Time is flying at lightening speed and it seems as if your "month" birthdays always sneak up on me.
You look SO big in this picture. I just love you so much!

Like every other month, you continue to learn SO many new things. You don't like to sit still (notice the photos in this post) and you want to walk so bad. You took one step on your own without holding onto anything. Then I think you scared yourself and sat down:) You're a pro at cruising on furniture and you crawl almost as fast as we can keep up. You've just about got the hang of standing up without having to pull yourself up. You've done it once, but that was the only time.
You wave hi and goodbye and you've started putting the telephone to your ear as if you're talking on it. You also love to play peek-a-boo and if I stop you grab my hands and push them towards my eyes to keep going. You like to play a game with your Aunt Natasha where you pretend like you're handing her something and when she reaches for it, you yank it away which makes you laugh and laugh.
Still only four teeth, but at your 9 month well child check your Dr. said he could see the other ones ready to poke through. I hope they do soon because you've started grinding your teeth a little and biting down really hard on anything you put in your mouth.
You're eating mostly table foods, but you love the baby food pouches and eat those when we're on the go or at restaurants. I've had to start giving you vegetables first because you won't eat them if you've already eaten your fruit. If you don't like something you push it out of our mouth with your tongue or throw it over the side of your high chair. If I tell you no in a stern voice you get a very sad look and will sometimes put your head down. Once you even stuck that bottom lip out and burst into tears which broke my heart and made me cry.
You still love oranges and this month you tried raspberries, blackberries, squash, and cucumber. You're taking 7oz bottles every 4-5 hours and usually have a sippy cup of water at each meal as well. You've also started signing "more" and I'm so proud of you! We're working on drink and eat as well.
At  your 9 month check up you weighed a little over 19 lbs which puts you in the 30th percentile. I can't remember how many inches tall you were, but you fell in the 90th percentile for height and 50th percentile for head size.
You wear size 3 diapers and will probably be in this size for awhile. You are all over the place in terms of clothing size depending on the brand. Most items are 6-12m or 9-12m, but a few 6-9m still fit and some 12m or 12-18m fit now that would be way to small by the time you actually turn 12m.
I'm SO happy to report that sleeping at night is going so much better. We tried a modified cry it out (let you cry, but not longer than 30 minutes) and after the 2nd night you were sleeping so much better. We pushed your bedtime back a little and you now go to sleep between 8-8:30pm. You will sometimes wake up once between 1:30-3am, take a bottle and then sleep again until morning, usually 7am. There have been quite a few nights though that you haven't woken up at all and slept from 8pm-5am, taken a bottle, and then slept again until 7am.
Bath time is still a fave and for some reason you think it's the perfect place to practice standing on your own without holding onto anything. Of course this makes me a nervous wreck. You also love my i-phone and when you get ahold of it you immediately want me to put music on so you can dance. You have the best little baby-white boy-booty bouncing dance ever.
There have also been a lot of new sounds and ba-ba seems like it's on repeat. You've also really enjoyed blowing raspberries this month. See below:)
Separation anxiety is in full swing. It's less when were around the house, but definitely more around other people. Even aunties, uncles, and grandmas get cries when they try to hold you. You usually get over it pretty quickly or can be easily distracted. Your favorite thing to do when I pick you up is to lay your head on me and say "ohhhh." And just like your brother, you love your blankets and rubbing the silky tag on them.
And when I don't let you have the camera during these little monthly photo shoots, you cry as if your little heart was broken...or I beat you. It's sad and a little comical at the same time.

 Let's take our time with these last 2 months before you turn one. Love you little Jackers.

Checking In

Well hello. Sorry for the unintentional blogging break. Life's been crazier than usual and the real craziness hasn't even started yet. I'll post a full Easter recap along with baby Jack's 10 month update later this week, but for now I'll leave you with this picture from Sunday. I LOVE the bow-ties that I ordered from Megan. Check out her ETSY store here.

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and Easter!

Lime & Cilantro Rice {Chipotle Style}

Did you know that when I was pregnant with Jack I couldn't stand Chipotle? The smell even bothered me. This was a problem for my husband who could eat Chipotle for every meal. Then a miraculous thing happened. Jack was born and not only did I like Chipotle again, I LOVED it. It's also extremely convenient when you've just had a baby to have your Chipotle loving husband pick some up for dinner. And lunch. They're closed for breakfast.

And...although I don't prefer rice with my Chipotle meal (gasp, I know), J assures me it's what makes it stand out from any other ole Mexican place. Being the amazing wife that I am, I decided to re-create Chipotle's unique rice recipe. I even wrapped the burrito in foil when I was done assembling it. I'm good.

From the first bite J proclaimed the rice was delicious and spot on for the actual thing. I scoured the internet looking for copy cat recipes and finally decided to go with a recipe I adapted from Chipotle Fan.

What You'll Need:
-1 cup white rice (made according to directions on box)
-2 tsp fresh cilantro
-1/2 regular lime or all natural lime juice in a bottle (it will tell you on the bottle how many tbs is equal to an actual lime)
-1/2 tsp salt

Cook rice according to directions on the box or bag. Keep it covered until you are finished with the other steps.

Finely chop cilantro and measure out lime juice.

Mix lime juice, salt, and cilantro together with a fork.

Un-cover the rice and slowly pour the mixture over it while fluffing the rice with a fork.

And remember if you want to be awesome. Go ahead and make a burrito with this rice.

Enjoy!
